About the film:
Formed in 1968 in Cologne Germany, Can is regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 20th century. Drawing from the minimalist tape looped techniques of composers like Terry Riley, the driving rhythms of American funk and R&B music like James Brown and The Meters, the buzzing churn of The Velevet Undergournd and the wild spontaneity of free jazz mavericks like Ornette Coleman, Can created a unique blend of the avant garde, primal and subliminal that pushed the boundaries and defined new parameters for how ‘rock’ music could sound. 

Cited as a major influence on musicians from Joy Division , Suicide and Sonic Youth to The Talking Heads, David Bowie and Brian Eno, Can’s sounds are still making their way into popular music having more recently been prominently sampled by artists like Kanye West, Spank Rock and UNCLE. 

A beautifully made documentary using TV performances, live show footage, studio sessions the film offers tons of in depth insight and information about the band - much more than a cursory glance for those new to Can and also much more than glazed over montages for lifelong fans.

Founded in 2013 in Columbia, Mo, Dismal Niche began as a small batch, artist operated tape label and community arts network committed to facilitating and archiving the expression of the more independent, esoteric and experimental accents of the local Columbia music and arts community. 

Since incorporating as a non-profit in April 2015 the activities of the organization have largely revolved around curating and facilitating the annual Dismal Niche Music and Arts Festival. With an emphasis on situating regional sonic experimenters within a larger national and global context, The Dismal Niche Music and Arts Festival's mission is to bring artists from across the U.S. and around the world to Columbia for a weekend offering residents of Columbia and the larger Mid-Missouri region rare opportunities to experience multimedia showcases and performances of critically thinking contemporary art and music.
